Four Derelicts, Wachapreague, Virginia. (click to enlarge) Pentax 6X7; 90mm f/2.8 lens; Tri-X film; Exposure not recorded. |
I saw these four derelicts, almost purposefully abandoned where they sit on the opposite side of the channel in Wachapreague on Virginia's Eastern Shore. I thought it a good composition and a good subject to be in black & white. This image was made in the 1985 so time frame. The derelicts are long gone now.
From news stores I've read and seen, evidently one can abandon their boat in a public waterway without risk. It seems that no law makes owners foot the bills to remove their derelict crafts. That is a shame as, either a concerned business or group or public funds, must be utilized to haul away these hazards to the environment and navigation. In fact, one small business owner in the city of Virginia Beach had taken it upon himself to remove several derelict boats in the waterways throughout the city. Congratulations to him and his civic pride!
On the other hand, these old boats make wonderful subjects for photography. Most of the dozens I had photographed in the past have now been removed, much to my dismay. But if I had to choose between photography and removing these derelicts, I would vote for removing them. It is just the right thing to do.
Thanks for looking. Enjoy!
