This is a very short post to mention something about the AF inconsistency issue plaguing mine and, according to their comments and emails to me, many others' Fujifilm X-cameras. I inadvertently discovered something that I did not know that may prove helpful.
Since my last update I had tried my X-T4 a few more times, hoping I could find some answers so that I could resolve the AF inconsistency issue. During those tests I tried an AF mode that I don't normally use. I set the AF Area to 9-point zone focusing and much to my delight, the focus was very consistent and accurate! That was a surprise. I believe 100% of my tests showed the focus scale land on the exact same spot. In AF-C mode, there was no hunting back and forth.
Although this is a nice discovery, it doesn't solve the original problems. Additionally, not all subjects can be focused well with a 9-point zone mode. They require a single AF point for accuracy. But the news is positive.
Both Rick Walker of the Image Doctors podcast and I have been working remotely on this AF issue. I passed my discovery on to him after which he conducted tests of his own. He advised me that when he set the AF Custom setting on #2 (the default is #1), that seemed to make the 9-point zone focus more likely to focus on what you want (center) instead of another area. If you have the AF inconsistency issue, try the 9-point zone focus and see if you can use it in your photography. At least it may help.
If I become aware of any other progress or breakthroughs, I'll update you with another post.
Thanks for looking. Enjoy!
