Another Time

A bit of nostalgia for your viewing pleasure this morning. (click to enlarge)

I 'found' this little scene in Clifton Forge, Virginia.  It is an old Ford panel truck with an old wooden Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O) caboose in the background.  It is part of the outdoor displays at the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Heritage Center.

I like the textures, the colors, the history and the setting in which I found these two historic vehicles.  The sign on the side of the old truck reads:

AGENT
BOB BERNHARDT
NEVADA, MO
LOCAL 6,000

I'll make the assumption that the last line refers to either local deliveries only and the gross vehicle weight is 6000 pounds or it could refer to a Teamsters or other union whose local was Local 6000.  I didn't find anything that would explain what it meant.

I'm happy these old relics are being saved.  As we know, that if we don't study and understand where we came from, we can't understand how we got to where we are today.

  1. I had a relative that was in the last group of conductors assigned to C&O freight trains.
Whenever I see one of the old wooden sided cabooses I think of him riding the rails.
He could tell you all the never heard of stops and names of places along the RR tracks.
The conductors were assigned as a pair. Turned out that I later lived next door to his partner. I asked each one (separately) what it was like working with the other. Each said the same thing. "Good dependable fellow, but sure could spin a yarn".
I wish I had been mature enough to ask them a lot more about the RR life.
