Grizzly Bear #399 in Grand Teton National Park. (click to enlarge) |
Several weeks ago, I posted a black & white portrait of a bison. Upon comment and encouragement from a good photographer friend with whom I had shared this image, I thought it fitting to post this black & white portrait of bear #399, a 28-year old female grizzly. She has exceeded the average lifespan of grizzly bears and, as of spring 2023 (they only reproduce every other year), was still having. cubs.
UPDATE:
Unfortunately, she was killed by a vehicle on Highway 89 south of Jackson, Wyoming on October 22nd. Where she was killed was far outside the national park boundaries where she lived. Her yearling cub, Spirit, was with her but its whereabouts is still unknown. It is believed Spirit was not injured. I am very grateful I had an opportunity to photograph and memorialize in my own archives this remarkable bear.
If you are interested in finding out more about her and her current cub as well as seeing additional images of both, you can find all that in this post, found here.
