Monochrome Monday; Late Spring Snow In Nebraska

Nebraska Route 385 North of Sydney. (click to enlarge)

A few years ago, my three lifelong friends and I decided for our annual get-together that we would meet in St. Louis and follow the Louis & Clark Expedition route from there to the Oregon coast of the Pacific Ocean.  At least the best we could.

We decided May was a good month.  However, weather and high prices ended up playing a role in the route we actually followed.  Severe thunderstorms and tornado watches/warnings in eastern Nebraska and northwestern Missouri was the first event that changed our course.  Then snow in western Nebraska was the second event.  Finally, extremely high prices for hotels in the area of Williamston, North Dakota (the fracking industry was booming at that time) was the third event that had us alter our course.  But we did get back on course in Montana and made it to the west coast.

Prior to encountering this scene, we were traveling west on Interstate 80 (to escape the path of the severe t-storms and tornadic activities) when, all of a sudden, the road was closed.  We were forced to exit at Sydney, Nebraska where luckily we arrived there relatively soon after the closure and were able to secure two hotel rooms for the night.  The next morning we started driving north along Route 385 on our way to the area of the Black Hills, Custer State Park and Mt. Rushmore (two of the guys had never been there before).  I made this image along Route 385.

We were a bit surprised that snow would fall in the Midwest that late in the season but I guess we shouldn't have been.  Whenever things such as I that which I have mentioned occur, it just makes the adventure better.

Note:  I was driving when I spotted this scene.  If one of the other guys was driving, I'm sure we would not have stopped!  Luck was with me!
