...while I'm at it, should I quote the lyrics (also the title) of the song sung by Leslie Gore in 1963?  "Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows, everything that's wonderful..."  Lol.  Enough sarcasm already.

But now it's time to say goodbye to summer for this year.

Personally, it pleases me as the summers have gotten hotter with more humidity than ever before.  I find it, and it may be because of my age, that I don't enjoy summers like I used to.  I just can't take the heat and humidity as well as I could when I was a young man.  I tend to not photograph and stay indoors more than the rest of the year.

Photographically, the humidity in the air on some days is so thick you can, metaphorically, 'cut it with a knife.'  In other words, the high moisture content in the air can ruin opportunities to make photographs at any distance other than relatively close up.  It can make your images visually abysmal, IMHO.  Can you say extreme haze!

Last week, we had October/November weather here in southeastern Virginia.  Temperatures were in the mid-70s F (~24 C) and the humidity hovered around 5055% all week.  Well, this week we are being punished for enjoying last week so much.  Temperatures this week have been in the mid-90s F (~35 C) with that 'cut it with a knife' kind of humidity.  I just want to close my blinds until these kinds of temperatures and humidity levels pass.

On to autumn, I say!  The cooler and dryer air creeps down from the north, the fall winds start to kick up and create rustling sounds as it blows the fallen leaves.  The trees start their annual change from greens to all sorts of beautiful colors.  Yes!  Hurry!  Now!

The autumn brings new energy to my photography and new opportunities open up to get out and stay out all day and photograph nature in all of her glory.

Could fall be time for another photographic road trip?  Hmmmm.

  1. I'm right there with you, Dennis. I'm in central California, so we don't have humidity, but the number of days over 100 degrees this summer has been unbearable. I cannot wait until fall and even winter to get the camera out more and do some hiking as well. Having lived in Tennessee for 17 years (moved back here a couple years ago), I can definitely sympathize with the humidity. Despite the miserable weather, I still hope to escape out to the Arizona/Utah desert in the next couple weeks and maybe catch monsoon thunderstorms.

    1. Doug, thank you for your comment. It seems I can still take the heat—to a point, but mix in high humidity and I’ll stay indoors if I can. Enjoy getting to the desert. I wish I could be out that way right now as well. ~Dennis
