Monochrome Monday; Cass Scenic Railroad; NIght Setup Photography

This image is interesting the in the fact that it has four geared steam locomotives posed together for a single photograph—at night.

The photo depicts the old Western Maryland Shea #6 in the front right.  Behind it is Shea #4 and above and between those two is Shea #3.  To the extreme left is a differently engineered geared steam locomotive, a Heisler.  This is Heisler #6.  These are all geared locomotives manufactured for the purpose of climbing steep grades.  In this case, they were used to bring down trees to go to lumber mills from high in the West Virginia mountains.  Shea locomotives have vertical cylinders while the Heisler locomotives have their cylinders cocked at an angle similar to a V-8 automobile engine.

This setup shot was part of a "Railfan Weekend" at Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, WVA.  I believe I shot this in 1975.  Maybe 1976.  The tourist railroad still operates and takes tourists on excursions to the top of Bald Knob.  Fun trip.  If in West Virginia during the summer, it is a nice place to spend a day.

NOTE:  After this post Monochrome Monday is going on summer vacation.  Hopefully, after a full summer of photography, there will be new material to post in the fall.
