The Pastels of Spring

A horseshoe bend on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River from Shenandoah River State Park
in Virginia.  Also, an inadvertent selfie when making this panorama. (click any photo to enlarge)

I can't help but notice how colorful spring is here in the Northern Hemisphere.  If you aren't paying attention, you should be.  Colors are all around you and they are beautiful!

From the lime green and oranges of the newly forming leaves to the pinks of the cherry trees, the whites of the dogwood flowers, the lavender of wisteria, the reds of Japanese red maples, the blues of bluebells and dark pink of the redbuds, the pastels of spring are all around.

Its too bad we photographers seem to focus on the fall of the year and the intense colors of the leaves.  Spring is just as pretty and as colorful but in a different way.

The next time you leave your home and go out for a walk or a drive in your car, take a good look around you to see what beauty is everywhere.  Take your camera because if you start to notice the colors, you surely will see something to photograph.

  1. Could not agree more Dennis. And it comes with a bonus. Many of the flowering trees and shrubs come with an amazing fragrance that lifts the spirit.

  2. A beautiful collection of images. It feels like Spring when I look at the images.
Late spring is a temporary interlude between late winter and the oppressive (for me anyway) humidity and heat of the Virginia summer.
I think this is the most beautiful time of year for the oaks, and other hardwoods when the young leaves emerge before quickly evolving into the deep green colors. Photogs chase the fall colors down from Maine to the South. A chase from South Carolina to Maine in the Spring might do as well.
Boston is at least two weeks behind Virginia in Spring colors.

    1. Thank you for your comment. Yes, a lovely time of the year. I think too many photographers ignore the pastels of spring.

  3. You are so right Dennis. I live in a rural village on the outskirts of Cambridge, UK, and I notice something new to photograph almost every day as I take my dog out for his morning constitutional! Spring is a wonderful month for colour, as are all the seasons, I find. More power to your elbow, and keep this excellent blog going.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words as well as taking time to comment. During next May marks my wife’s and my 50th wedding anniversary and we are hoping we can travel to the UK for a few weeks as a treat to ourselves. Maybe we can witness some of the beautiful spring colors about which you write. ~Dennis
