Monochrome Monday; Destroyed Church and Cemetery in Taos Pueblo

San Geronimo de Taos church and graveyard.  This church was twice destroyed in wars between
the Pueblo indigenous people and the Spanish.  The original church was constructed in 1619 but
then destroyed in the Spanish Revolt of 1680.  The church was then rebuilt but, again, destroyed
in 1847.  Its successor is built nearby and survives today.

During our visit to Taos, New Mexico and surrounds, we made sure we spent several hours visiting Taos Pueblo, reported to be the oldest continually inhabited community in the United States.  The Native Americans are thought to have built the Pueblo between 1000-1450 AD.

I found Taos Pueblo utterly fascinating and well worth visiting.  My wife and I spent several hours wandering around among the adobe homes, many of which are interconnected and of two to three levels like an apartment building.  These building were obviously made to last centuries.  I made quite a few memorable images during our visit.

If you are in the Taos area, I suggest you pay Taos Pueblo a visit.  I think will be fascinated by what you find, both historically and photographically.
