CSX train along the New River (click any image to enlarge) |
After my last post showing some railroad related photographs, I received a request from one of my readers for some additional railroad photos, but from West Virginia if I had any. So, here are a few, mostly old, railroad images from that great state.
Most of these images were made in the 1970s and 1980s on film, either 35mm Kodachrome or medium format Tri-X.

Thanks! An impressive series of photographs-especially liked the night shot of the Shay. I've never been lucky enough to see a Shay in the flesh.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Bob. If you get an opportunity to get to Cass Scenic Railroad in WV, you will see several. They used to have both a Heisler and a Climax geared locomotives as well but I don’t know if they still have them. I think since the state of WV took over the operation a few years ago, things have improved.
DeleteBless your heart. These are wonderful photographs! The Heisler is still operating out of Durbin WV for at least one more year. The Climax was or is being restored at Cass. Especially enjoyed seeing the Thurmond water tanks, as they no longer exist.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the photos. Thanks for the update on the Heisler and Climax. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to Cass, Durbin, etc. I need to get back there soon.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I’m looking into the past with the black and whites. Perfect photos for monochrome especially with all the grittiness and texture. I think some of these would also look great in sepia too!
ReplyDeletePeter, thank you. For the first many years of my photographic ‘career’ I only photographed in black and white for my personal work. I’ve never really toned many of my prints with sepia. I don’t have a good reason to give. That said, often times, I’ll now use Lightroom to warm the blacks and shadows of my digital black and white work. I like a slight bit of warm tones in them.
