Almost Timeless

Multi-story dwelling within the Taos Pueblo, Taos, New Mexico (click to enlarge)

While visiting the Taos Pueblo, I saw this scene and wanted to make an image of it to reflect the timeless nature and culture of the Pueblo peoples from the past as well as those who currently occupy the Pueblo, located in Taos, New Mexico.  Really just a documentary image is what I was going for.

I was "almost" able to do that with a few exceptions.  At first glance, this image represents a typical multi-story home within the Pueblo.  I thought it faithfully represented the construction methods and living conditions that have existed here for about 1000 years, as we were told by our guide.  That is, until I spotted the aluminum gutters, metal downspout and metal vent pipe from, what I assume, serve a modern stove and/or heater located within the structure (and... I just noticed bars on the front door.  Most of the homes had bars on the windows and doors. That says much to me.).  I'm not saying it isn't okay to have some modern fixtures and construction materials mixed in with the traditional, but I was hoping for all original.  This image didn't quite get there.

However, I still like this image and I think it still pretty faithfully represents a place that has largely been lost from time.
