If you aren't aware, B and H has a You Tube channel that is packed full of interesting presentations by some of the best photographers in their fields. You can find their You Tube channel here. Most of the hour + presentations are listed under the heading "Event Space," which is their terminology for their professional photographic presentation events. They also have shorter videos on gear, video, pro audio, etc. Lots and lots of videos with more posted each day.
Recently, B and H held an event called OPTIC 2016. I wish I was able to attend but was not. Second best, B and H put all of the excellent presentations by some of the best wildlife, fine art, black and white, travel, etc. photographers on the web for all of us to see—FREE of Charge! I've watched at least 10 so far and all are excellent.
Even if you don't patronize B and H, please take advantage of their generosity in them providing some of the best photographic presentations for our benefit. In other circumstances, you would pay dearly to hear these same photographers give the same presentations in a workshop.
I will continue to patronize B and H as, in over 30 years, I've never had a bad experience with them. Not one! In fact, they not only have never tried to "up-sell" me to buy something more expensive, but the sales staff has actually recommended a less expensive brand which, in their opinion, was just as good but for far less money. They have never steered me wrong.
Great people. Great business model. Great customer service philosophy. Take advantage of what they give free to us.
Thank you B and H. Thank you for your commitment to the photographic community and your generosity.
Thanks for looking. Enjoy!

Building the $2,500 camera kit –
ReplyDeleteWith the purchase of the Olympus 9-18mm zoom from KEH for $388.00, I completed my Micro four-thirds starter kit. This was the most expensive lens I bought, while the 40-150 zoom came in at $77.00 with free shipping from the Olympus refurb site and 20% additional discount.
This took about 8 months, but by strategically using a combination of new, refurbished, and good condition used gear I came up with a solid set-up.
The kit has the Olympus EM-1, Olympus 17, 25 and 45 (1.8) lenses, Olympus 8mm lens cap fisheye, the 40-150 and 9-18 zooms, the 14mm pani wide angle, and 60 mm Sigma 2.8 prime. I wanted to maximize the small size of micro four-thirds so no 2.8 zooms (but I did try one of them out).
Including the carryover from the sale of my Olympus EP-3 (loss of $40 from my purchase), I am in at $2,513.
This shows that you can put a great system together at a reasonable cost if you can spend some time hunting around.
Still to be solved is the low-light and wildlife set-up which might be doable with the Nikon D-500 or some other set-up.
Also, the small camera solution is missing, but given the large number of 1 inch cameras announced recently, this may come together soon.
This does not bode well for camera manufacture profits – discounts of 40-60% can kick in about two years down the road – and even more on the used side.
What do you think about
Thanks - Chris
I am a Adorama freak. I've been shopping there since 1973~ Never cared for B&H. Something about them bothered me...I was in there once, and I wasn't treated badly, but it wasn't a good experience either.
ReplyDeleteJM, I buy quite a bit from Adorama as well. I can say the same things about Adorams that I have about B and H. However, I wanted to highlight the videos of Optic 2016 in this post. Both are excellent retail establishments.
