The Story Behind The Image; Pike's Peak, Colorado

View from Pike's Peak (click to enlarge)
I edited this to be slightly "cool" as I felt it portrayed the cold and dreary view.
During one of our cross-country road trips, my wife and I found ourselves in Colorado Springs, Colorado during some beautiful fall weather.  As we sat in our hotel room one evening, we researched what would be worthwhile seeing in the general area over the next few days.  One of the things that made it to the top of our list was traveling up the cog railroad to the top of Pike's Peak.  Since it was still tourist season, we thought we would take the first train to the top to beat some of the crowds.

The next morning, we drove over to the entrance and bought tickets for the first train.  It was a beautiful ride.  The day was bright and sunny and the weather was perfect.  As we climbed closer and closer to the mountain top, here and there, a bit of fog started to appear.  By the time we reached the top at 14,110 ft. (4300 m), the beautiful day was nowhere to be seen and we were totally socked in with fog.  Darn.

Well, the only thing to do is to make lemonade out of lemons so I walked around the summit and looked for images.  This was one of the ones I made that morning.

We plan on returning one day.  However, next time we won't go first thing in the morning. We also learned a lesson for other travel in taking into consideration weather at our destination and not only at our starting point as well as the time of day of our arrival.

By the way, they had an oxygen bar at the summit in their visitors' building.  Oxygen was available for those who had a hard time breathing.  I did okay breathing, I just developed a splitting headache within 30 minutes.  Time to head down the mountain...

Thanks for looking.  Enjoy!
