A Few Photographic Resources That May Interest You

Wigwam Hotel, Holbrook, Arizona

Visit my photographic galleries at www.dennismook.com

I thought I would provide you with some of my favorite photographic resources.  You must, however, take into account that your photographic interests and level of proficiency may be different from mine, but here are some blogs, online retailers and other photographic sites that I have found valuable.  Today I will highlight some of my favorite blogs.  In the coming days I will tackle the other two topics.

Disclaimer:  My lists are not comprehensive, but the resources I found valuable to me and to which I have returned day after day, week after week, year after year.  You may have some favorite ones of which I am not aware, and my readers and I would appreciate you leaving a comment so we can check them out.

Blogs

Alltop  This is a site that aggregates blogs for many subjects.  Type "photography" in the search bar on the homepage and it will take you to the page with over 100 photo blogs.  What is also helpful is that when you mouse over a blog post, you can then read the first line or two which then allows you to decide if you want to click and open it or move on.  Excellent site.   I'm sure you will find blogs on other topics that may also interest you.

The Online Photographer  Mike Johnston, to me, is the best photographic writer on the web.  Be prepared to think while you read his almost daily posts.  Take time to go through his archives and read what he and his guest writers have to say.  You won't be sorry.

Ming Thein | Photographer  is a photographer in Singapore.  He has so much interesting, instructive material about the craft and art of photography, you will spend days reading his archives.  Not only is he a good writer, but he is an excellent photographer and teacher.

The Pixelated Image  David DuChemin is a Canadian photographer, humanitarian, author, publisher, educator, traveler and an extraordinary individual.  His mantra is "Gear is Good, Vision is Better."  That kind of sums it up.  He is into helping you understand how to increase your creativity through his words, book, etc.  His Craft & Vision books are e-books and only $5.00.  He even has some he gives away as free downloads.  David, as I said, is as generous as extraordinary.  I have listened to him speak and he is wonderful communicator.  The books are the best photographic bargain on the web.  I highly recommend reading his blog regularly and buying some of his books on photographic vision.

The Luminous Landscape  Michael Reichmann is a professional photographer out of the Toronto Canada area and his blog has been one of my favorites for at least 10 years.  He has a plethora of material written by him as well as guests.  He has reviews, opinion, wonderfully instructive articles and about everything else you may be interested in photographically.

Lenswork Daily   Brooks Jenson is the editor and publisher of Lenswork magazine.  If you truly enjoy black and white photography and want to read what a very well experienced and respected individual has to say about photography as art and craft, Brooks is your guy.  I have subscribed to the magazine for years and anticipate each issue.  He also has a podcast to which is well worth listening.  Each episode is around 5 minutes so it doesn't take too long to listen and learn from what he has to say.  Lenswork Publishing also sells some terrific books, portfolios of excellent images and well as some other excellent items.  I just wish he would post "Daily" as in the blog title.  Can't seem to get enough of him and his thoughts.

Photofocus  A great website for insightful commentary on all things photographic.  It published 365 days per year and they also have a podcast of the same name.  Scott Bourne and Rich Harrington are the principle authors.  Both are very well respected and experienced.  Scott is very opinionated and doesn't beat around the bush telling his readers what he thinks.  Agree or disagree, it is refreshing.

Martin Bailey Photography  Martin is a British ex-pat now a resident and citizen of Japan.  Martin is a photographer, author, educator, and just all around great human being.  His site also has his podcast which are well worth a listen.  You can't help but like him.  I would love to go on one of his snow monkey workshops on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.  That would be a treat!

Moose Peterson   Moose is a long time pro that loves to share his knowledge.  Seems like a really nice guy.  He is a Nikon shooter but what he preaches is appropriate to any kind of equipment you may use.  He has a daily blog that contains interesting little tidbits of photographic philosophy.

Scott Kelby  I'm told that Scott is one of the nicest, most sharing guys you will ever meet.  He is the founder and president of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) as well as Kelby Training.  Scott has a daily blog that contains shooting tips, information, etc.  He also loads full length videos on his blog of programs that Kelby TV create.  All in all, extremely informative.

The Visual Science Lab  Kirk Tuck is a photography based out of Austin, Texas.  He is a prolific and great writer.  He writes some very interesting posts on a variety of photographically related topics.  He makes you think, if that is what you want to do.  I do.

What do all of these people have in common?  They are very generous with their time, knowledge and experience.  They care enough to give away all of their knowledge.  We should all do that.

More tomorrow.

Enjoy!

Thanks for looking.
