The best photography blog on the Internet is The Online Photographer (TOP) www.theonlinephotographer.com). Without a doubt, if you want to learn more about the history of photography, deep dive into issues in photography, more fully understand the art of photography, realize the significance of photography today and in the past, as well as get a practical feel for relevant photographic gear, visit The Online Photographer every day.
Mike Johnston is the proprietor and chief editor of The Online Photographer. Mike was educated in photography and art and has had a widely varied career in photography. He speaks with authority and experience. Mike is an excellent writer and has far-reaching interests that he also brings to his blog. I find I am always closely reading his words as they provide relevance to my interests. A nice touch is that Mike almost never interjects politics into his writings although he frequently writes about disparate non-photographic topics. Politics is like an open wound and brings out the worst in many. That being said, Mike is very passionate about which he does choose to write.
The Online Photographer regularly publishes content by others, such as Ctein (his only name pronounced Ka-Tine), Oren Grad, Carl Weese, Ken Tanaka and a host of others. I find it refreshing to hear opinions about specific topics by others who have something relevant to say.
Other nice and appreciated touches are Mike's publishing of his "Random Excellence" series of photographs he finds and presents to us as gifts and "soft" reviews of equipment he either rents of buys. By "soft" review, I mean he goes out and uses the equipment, then relays his thoughts about the practical as well as technical use of the equipment. His reviews are the opposite of what you would find on DPReview, which are highly technical and overly comprehensive.
Books--Mike is a prolific reader and photographic book collector. He regularly writes about new and old photographic books he believes his audience show know. He has brought to my attention many photographic and art books about which I didn't know existed, but based upon his recommendation, I purchased and am glad I did. Those books have opened my eyes and mind into aspects of photography that has expanded my knowledge base. Even more than that, the books are of high quality and, if you enjoy studying photographs by accomplished photographic artists, these are for you also.
I recommend you take a look at The Online Photographer. Go back through the archives and pick out some posts that are of particular interest to you. Visit everyday for a few weeks to get a good feel for the website. If you do, I think you will go back day after day. Enjoy!
Thanks for looking.
