Hmmm. What A Treat! A Direct Dial Telephone!

While walking around in Seligman, Arizona, the birthplace of the resurrection of “Historic” Route 66 (look up Angel Dagadillo if you want more information about the rebirth of The Mother Road), I saw this wall painted advertisement for one of the old motels on the Main Street through town.  I found it quite telling.

Would this sign tempt you to stop and stay here?  I'm not thinking I would.  Just looking at the condition of the sign tells me something about how well the maintenance may be kept up with the rooms, etc.  My question becomes if the sign they use to attract business and advertise their property is this neglected, what can I expect when I open the door to my room?   But the motel is in business as far as I know so someone must be attracted by these exclusive amenities!

Some of the amenities listed, evidently, rare at the time, seem so common and expected today.  In a way, it is humorous.  The same could be said about almost everything.  For example, our cameras and lenses—in decades past, a manual everything camera and lenses that would be judged ‘just okay’ today were highly desired.  Today, our expectations are so much higher.

This motel sign is a snapshot of a time past and the culture of travel those many decades ago.

Thanks for looking. Enjoy!
