Fall 2025 Road Trip; On To Arizona

If you haven't been here, you most likely know this place from the Eagles song, "Take it Easy."
"Sanding on the corner in Winslow, Arizona, such a fine sight to see.  A girl, my Lord, in a flatbed
Ford, slowing down to take a look at me."
It's all right here, a huge touristy area. There is also a red flatbed ford truck parked on the street
just out of the frame to the right.  (click any image to enlarge)

This is a continuation of my series of posts about my recent, fall 2025, cross country and back road trip, primarily following Route 66 west.

There are many, many cool places to stop in Arizona.  For example, Holbrook has the Wigwam Motel.  Winslow has the famous 'corner.'  The Jackrabbit Trading Post has been in business for decades and decades.  The giant meteor crater is always interesting to see.  Flagstaff, Williams' quaint downtown area, the Grand Canyon (if you want to deviate north a bit), Seligman, Hackberry, Kingman, Cool Springs and, of course, Oatman, the home of all of the free roaming burros.  We've stopped in all of them in the past and did so again this time.  But since I've previously photographed them extensively, I didn't make many photographs this time.

Route 66 is an endless string of photographic eye candy.  Every time you turn around, there is something interesting to photograph.

Here are a few images I made on this trip.

A dual purpose photo.  A railroad photo for you railfans and the famous Jackrabbit Trading Post sign
for you fans of Route 66 and Americana.  The Jackrabbit trading post has been in business since
1949.

The last two times I was in Seligman, it was sleepy with few people.  I understand busses from
Los Angeles and Las Vegas visit every day.  When we visited this time, there were lots of Asian
and Italian tourists spending their money just as fast as they could!  It was a sight to see!

Aztec Motel in Seligman, AZ

A 1959 Edsel.  Auto enthusiasts say it was the Ford Motor Company's biggest blunder.  I guess
then the Mustang was Ford’s greatest hit?

Whether or not you like science, you will appreciate the size and grandeur of this meteor
crater.  It is about 5 miles off Interstate 40 in Arizona.  The small whitish thing you see in the
lower right is a viewing stand.  The meteor was formed 50,000 years ago by an object about 150 ft. in diameter traveling at about 25,000 mph (40,000 kph).  They say it took 10 seconds to form!

Hackberry General Store, Hackberry, Arizona

I've photographed this little scene in Hackberry before.  Each time I return, I see it has degraded just
a little more.  A good reason not to put off these kinds of trips.  Go now!

Cool Springs, Arizona.  The little stone service station adjacent to this sign is an interesting stop.
It is mainly a curio shop now.  But...this sign says it all.  The road between Cool Springs and
Oatman, AZ is as exciting as any you'll drive in the United States! Eight miles, 191 turns and
no guardrails!  It was my day to drive.  That is better than being a passenger and looking
down over the edge of the road at the bottom of the cliffs!

Next Up:  California.  We spent as little time as possible in California as the cost of everything was much greater than any of the other states and places we had visited.  For example, gasoline in Texas for $2.56.  In California, we saw several places where gasoline was $6.49!
