Recently, as I was driving by this local beach along the James River in southeastern Virginia, I noticed there were lifeguards but not a single person on the beach nor in the water. I thought it especially unusual since the temperature was about 92º F (33ºC). My intent was to make a couple of exposures depicting the emptiness. I thought a beach on a hot summer day devoid of any swimmers and sun bathers but with two lifeguards sitting side-by-side was interesting in and of itself.
But then, as I approached I noticed a large gaggle of Canada Geese on the beach. They were parading in front of the lifeguards. That made me wonder just who the lifeguards were actually guarding? I can only assume (wink, wink😉) there was some question about the swimming abilities of the geese that would require close observation in case one went under. In fact, there were so many geese, it was prudent to station two lifeguards in case of a scenario that required simultaneous rescues Lol.
You never know what you will see or what will unfold in front of you if you don’t keep both your eyes and mind wide open!
