Dawn After A Long Awaited Snow

A beautiful morning! Taken through my bedroom window.  I am thankful and grateful I am alive to
enjoy these small pleasures in life.  (click to enlarge)

On this past Wednesday and Thursday we had, what was for me, a long awaited significant snow event.  We don't get much snow here in southeastern Virginia.  For the past few years, not even a dusting.  It seems if it does snow a little, it is melted the next day.  This time it was different.

We haven't had a 'significant' snow event in about 10 years.  The most significant snowfalls I’ve experienced here were in the first week of March, 1980.  It snowed 10” (~25cm) and seven days later another 14” (~35cm).  Wow!  (I made a composite panorama photo of our house after the second snowfall.  In the film days, I had made several photos, printed each negative exactly the same (about A5 size), then physically cut and pieced them together.  I then mounted the composited print on mat board.)

The predictions for snow for this area were from 4" to 13", (~10 to 33cm) depending upon location.  The predictions were pretty accurate.  Where I live, I measured in several places and the average was 7 inches (~18cm) of snow.  The bonus was that the temperatures were not supposed to warm above freezing for Thursday and only a little above yesterday.  That means the snow would stick around for a much longer time instead of melting completely or turning to ugly dirty slush.  In fact, as of this posting, my property is still covered in snow.  Yay!

When I awoke Thursday morning, this image shows what I saw outside my bedroom window.  Gorgeous.  I am so thankful that I am around to enjoy these tidbits of beauty in life.  I appreciate every one.  I don't take any for granted.

I grew up in a small town in western Pennsylvania just at the lower boundary of the infamous 'snow belt.'  It seems we had snow all the time.  I know we didn't but my friends and I had so much fun in the snow that those good times dominate my winter childhood memories.  I could go on and on about my childhood and the winter snows, but I'll refrain.  Needless to say, whenever it snows here, it brings back many of those fond memories.

I know a lot of people don't like snow.  That's just fine.  I do and I enjoy it every time it snows.  If you like snow, enjoy it when it comes.  If you don't like snow, there is always Florida for the winter.  Good luck with that!  Lol

P.S. Happy Birthday to President George Washington!  Also, Happy Birthday to my grandfather.  If he had lived, he would have been 140 years old today.  Could you imagine?  Not me.

  1. Congratulations on the unusual snowfall! I thought of your wishes for snow when I saw the TV forecast prediction of the storm track for the deepest snow in Virginia.
