Monochrome Monday; Rural Montana Grain Elevators

Grain elevators and railroad tracks.  Reed Point, Montana. (click to enlarge)

I spotted these grain elevators as I was driving west on Interstate 90.  Immediately I pulled off the highway on the adjacent exit.  As I arrived, a freight train came barreling through.  Of course, I photographed it.  But I also wanted to photograph this scene without a train.

What strikes me most, photographically, when out in the western United States is the clarity of the air due to the humidity levels being so low.  Colors are more pure and intense, shadows are deeper while those items that are bright seem to reflect more of the sunlight.  Out there is a completely different experience than one has photographing back east with the ever pervasive humidity.

Note:  if you notice, neither grain elevators’ vertical walls are perpendicular to the ground.  Indeed, they were leaning!  Makes for a bit of cognitive dissonance.

  1. Quite some time ago, I worked for company that had a very generous policy of giving workers a two-month paid sabbatical every seven years. One of my coworkers used his sabbatical to document these rural grain elevators. He used black and white film and (I think) medium format cameras. The results were striking; thanks for bringing them back to mind.

    1. Bob, what a nice comment. You’re welcome. I, too, could make a project out of photographing these old wooden grain elevators. David Plowden is one of my favorite photographers and I get my inspiration from him and his work. I’ve been fortunate to photograph quite a few in the Midwest as well as this summer driving east on Route 2 in Montana. Americana at its best! ~Dennis
