Monochrome Monday; Portrait Of An American Bison

Bison—huge, mean, dangerous, imposing, ornery, you name it.  You don't want to get too close to
one of these.  The largest weighed was 3800 lbs. (1723kg) and they can run as fast as 35mph (56kph)!

This large male bison was standing not too far off the road just outside of the Wall, South Dakota entrance to Badlands National Park.  As I was looking at him through my Nikon 180-600mm lens, I noticed most of the time his eye was closed.  I think he was catching an afternoon nap in the middle of a storm threatening day.

I made several images of him, my goal being to capture his eye actually open.  Safety was my first thought and I was far enough away and very close to my vehicle's open door so that I could jump in just in case...

Thanks for looking. Enjoy!
