Is There Any Photo Gear, Cameras Or Lenses, That You Regret Selling?

I'm sure almost everyone reading this post has owned more than one camera and more than one lens.  A simple question for you.

Is there any photography gear you have owned and then sold that you wish you hadn't?  Why?

I can only think of one piece of kit that I sold that I would love to buy another (used) copy if I could find one in tip top condition at a bargain price.  That is the Olympus 300mm f/4 lens.

I really enjoyed that lens not only for its 600mm f/4 full frame field of view but I also used it for many close up subjects.  It is not too big or heavy and the image quality is superb.  Yes, I'd love to find another and add it back to my kit.

There may be another thing or two but I am not coming up with anything else at the moment.

Regrets.

  1. I main regret was selling my collection of 120 cameras. Beginning in 2006 I bought most of the 645, 6x6, 6x7, and 6x9 cameras I had lusted after in the last century. Bronica, Fuji, Hasselblad, Mamiya, Pentax, Rollei – I sampled one or more models from most of the camera makers. But after getting a Nikon CoolScan it just became so much easier to digitize 35mm, plus I could use my Nikon lenses on both my film and digital cameras, that I couldn't justify holding onto expensive cameras that were only used sporadically. I made the right decision, but at times I sure miss handling those beautiful devices from another era!

    1. Thanks for your comment. I completely understand how you feel. Those medium format cameras, some of which I’ve also owned, were gems of precision and craftsmanship and a joy to hold and use. ~Dennis

  2. Dennis--to help fund other purchases, I sold my Olympus 12-40 f2.8 and the Panasonic 35-100 f2.8. Those are two lenses I wished I had kept, especially the Panny 35-100. It was so sharp, yet small, lightweight and versatile. I always felt like it was the personification of the m4/3 philosophy.

    1. I agree. Those two focal length zooms are perfect for m4/3. I currently have the 12-40mm f/2.8 and I used to have both the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 and 35-100mm f/2.8. Those Panny lenses were small and very high quality. That said, the Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 lens is no slouch. Excellent! Thanks for the comment. ~Dennis

  3. Dennis: The one lens I regret selling was a Nikon 400mm f5.6 ED, the original version which was not internal focus. It was beautifully made, bitingly sharp and a joy to use. I also regret selling my Nikon F3 to dip my toe into Canon for a few years, but that lens should still be on my shelf. I grabbed it used for $400 and it was a steal.

    1. Thanks for commenting. I never owned the 400mm f/5.6 ED but I did once buy a Nikkor 300mm f/4 ED lens from the local newspaper for $100. It was beat up, as you would expect, but it was a fine lens. The F3 is still my all time favorite 35mm film camera. Second to that was my F2A. I wish I had nice, clean copies of both today, not to use*, but add to my display. ~Dennis *well, maybe use on occasion! Wonderful cameras.
