Monochrome Monday; The Watcher

The Watcher. (click to enlarge)

This image was made during one of my business trips to Hawaii.  Since I was normally out there for about a week or so at a time, instead of trying to adjust to their time zone, which is either a five or six hour difference from the Eastern Time Zone in the U.S. (they don't follow Daylight Savings Time), then try to quickly adjust back, I normally went to bed around seven or eight in the evening then awakened around 3:30 to 4 a.m.  That allowed me to go out before dawn each day to photograph.  I came to look forward to the sun rising over the Pacific Ocean each morning and the quiet and stillness of the Hawaiian beach.  It was not after the sun rose that the traffic, people, noise and chaos reappeared.

There is this rock jetty just east of Waikiki Beach.  I'd seen many people walk out to the end of it.  Some just to look at the ocean, some to feed pigeons and gulls.  When I saw this woman walk out and strike this pose, I made a few images of her.  She is looking toward the upper right third of the photograph at a small boat paddled by two individuals.  It is hard to see as the waves and water obscure its small size.  However, you can see its wake.  I thought she was a swimmer by the way she was dressed but she was actually a bicyclist.

  1. If you are in Hawaii, how can the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean. Love your blog, I too use both an Oly system and Fuji system.
