An Idea To Get Your Photographic Juices Flowing During The Winter Doldrums

(click any image to enlarge)

Want something to do photographically during these drab days of winter?  Pick a color.  Any color and go out and just photograph interesting things with the color you picked.  The color you picked doesn't have to be the only color in the composition, but a notable one.  That will open your eyes to things you never would have seen.  You will find yourself concentrating on that particular color and, all of a sudden, things that you didn't notice have now entered your consciousness.

An example of that was before I retired I had a project that I managed in Hawaii.  I ended up going to Hawaii ten times over a period of five years.  After the first four or five times, I had fully toured the islands and made some really interesting photographs of all sorts indigenous to those islands and the culture.  So what I did on one trip was pick the color red and concentrated on seeing red and photographing things that were predominantly red.  A very interesting exercise.  Of course, if I saw other interesting compositions during my travels I didn't pass them by but I concentrated my vision on red.

I've posted some examples of things that caught my eye over the years that highlight the color red.

Try it.  If you don't like a color, pick a letter.  Or pick a shape.  Or pick an object, a number or a pattern.  The idea is to open your vision to things all around you that you might just take for granted or ignore.
