First One!

A Pied-Billed Grebe.  (click to enlarge)

The other day I was scouting a pond and saw this lone bird repeatedly diving and then returning to the surface.  It looked different than any duck I had previously seen.  I knew that I had never seen one before.  It was the bird's bill that was differently shaped—not flat and broad like a duck's.  It reminded me somewhat of a Raven's beak.

I was afraid if I got out of my vehicle I would scare it away so I made several images of it from the driver's seat.  When I returned home, I attempted to identify it but wasn't sure.  I sent out a text message to a few bird photographers I know and Dave Hileman (TwoLaneTouring.com) immediately identified it as a Pied-Billed Grebe.  It is not a duck even though it kind of looks and acts like a duck.

Here is a website that has some additional information about this particular bird.

My thanks to incredibly knowledgeable Mr. Hileman for his quick and accurate response.

It's kind of fun to spot a new bird now and then.  Even more fun to bring back some nice images of it.

Thanks for looking. Enjoy!
