It's about this time of year that I start looking closely at any and all trees for the first sign of autumn. Usually I can find a tree or two with a couple of leaves that turn prematurely. The other day, I found my tree in a local cemetery. The peak week for fall foliage color in SE Virginia normally occurs around the second week in November. So finding leaves that have turned a full two months early is a treat.
I love the fall season. I can't wait to say goodbye to the heat and humidity of summer and welcome the cooler, dryer weather of fall. I can't wait for the leaves to show their real colors and give us a splendid natural show. That is why I look for the first vestiges of the upcoming fall season in the way of a few leaves turning color.
When I saw the red leaves, my outlook instantly changed. I felt a little lift in my spirits in anticipation of what is to come and a smile came to my face. My day was made.
