So...what have I been doing since last Friday? Well, if you must ask...
Emptying a second floor climate controlled storage into a U-Haul rental box van, driving it to the city in which we now live, then unloading the van and placing the things inside our new house.
Working with a moving company crew to ensure they get all of our household goods that we had in a larger climate controlled storage area into their two moving vans, over to our new house and into the house and as close to each item's final position without denting, scratching, scarring or damaging any of it or our walls or woodwork. They did very well but a piece of glass was broken and I only found one mark on a wall. The mark was from the last item of the day and I guess the guy was a bit tired by then. Small mark. I have touch up paint. All in all, the moving crew was professional, careful, efficient and did very well, indeed.
Picking up heavy boxes, carrying them and setting them down. Cutting open said boxes.
Taking contents from said boxes and figuring out where in our new house the stuff will go.
Placing furniture. Then moving placed furniture and placing it again. And again until my wife is happy with where the furniture sits.
Taking clothes out of boxes and putting them in dresser drawers. Hanging clothes up in a closet.
Fighting a battle with 'the shingles.' Get the vaccine. You don't want shingles. Take my word for it.
Picking up more heavy boxes, carrying them upstairs and putting them down.
Unpacking boxes. Unpacking boxes. Unpacking boxes. Did I mention there are a lot of boxes to unpack?
Trying to figure out how to fit all of the things we kept, even after divesting ourselves of most of our stuff, into spaces in a smaller home with fewer places to put stuff. A daunting task. It will take time but we'll figure it out.
Sitting outside of an emergency room for 5 hours while my wife stayed with her 97 year old mother who fell to the floor trying to turn off the light next to her bed. I couldn't go in because I had a case of the shingles. My mother-in-law did crack her third cervical vertebrae but no surgery is required and she is recuperating nicely. See photo at top of post. That was my view all night long. Did I mention it was about 88 degrees F with high humidity? No breeze. Sitting in a parking lot all night long. Not my idea of a good time!
Setting up my new office, computer, peripherals, etc. so I could write this post. Everything works!
I did keep all of my photo gear and related items so I kept those close to me over the past 9 months. Where will they go in the new house?
You get my point. In a few months, I'll be 70 years old and I really have no business at my age carrying heavy boxes, up and down stairs, moving heavy things, etc. At least in my mind I shouldn't be doing that.
It will take us a couple of weeks to get everything logically placed, settled and a new routine developed. Humans are creatures of routine and habit. But we will get there.
So, what's my best advice today? Don't move if you absolutely don't have to. It's a terrible chore that should be avoided at all costs. If you are my age, save your money and hire someone to do the heavy work and save yourself medical bills for hurting your back, getting a hernia, etc. Just sayin'.
*This is my best advice today. Other days I may choose other "best advice." It all depends on what's going on any particular day.
Finally, it's good to be back at the keyboard. No new photos yet, but I may have a chance to get out for a little while next week and wander to see what I can find. Let's hope!
Thanks for looking. Enjoy!

Dennis,
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain. I emptied a single storage bin (8' x 10') back in late February (a few weeks after my 70th) and moved my bedroom to a new apartment. I had my daughter and a friend help me, no professional movers. Then for the better part of March and April I spent my time being Mr. IKEA furniture assembler. Are we having "Too much fun". I still have little piles of things that haven't been properly put away.
Best of luck to you and the wife.
ag, I feel your pain! Lol. Thanks for your comment. We had two storage units, a 10 x 15 ft. and a 10 x 25 ft. one. My wife, my daughter’s mother-in-law and I emptied the smaller one, including a 250 lb. dresser! We had a moving crew move our things from the large one. More than I can handle. Now the task is finding a proper p,ace for everything and getting it there. But we’re making excellent progress!

ReplyDeleteI had no idea that you and I are so close in age although I do have you beat by some years! You write young and you act young and take that as a compliment!! I don't mind the "moving" per se. What I mind (if the move is far enough away) is lining up new doctors, dentists, supermarkets, etc.
While the boxes, furniture, etc. is a "pain," one can take their time getting to things. Weaving into a new social, medical and spiritual life is quite another!
Anyway, from an "army brat" who has moved more times than I would like to mention, I wish you and your family the very best! Hang in there!!
Jeff, thanks for the kind words and well wishes. I’m almost 70 but I act and feel like I’m in my early 40s. Besides, I promised myself decades ago that I would never fully grow up. I still have a lot of ‘kid’ in me. I’m fortunate, I guess. Fortunately for my wife and me, we only moved 25 miles from our previous location so we didn’t have to get new docs, etc. just a new pharmacy. Other than that, it isn’t too far to visit all of of other providers. Thanks again and stay safe.
