I'm sure you have heard the saying that "the air was so thick you could cut it with a knife." I think this image illustrates what that phrase means. It was one of those hot summer days with ‘tropical’ humidity made worse by all the hundreds of square miles of nearby trees 'exhaling' water vapor.
This image is basically straight out of the camera. I didn't want anyone thinking I manipulated it to look worse than it was that day. That is not fog. That is the humidity in the air. I think this may represent a not too untypical summer day in the mountains of West Virginia. The image was made from Hawk's Nest State Park. The bridges were originally used by the defunct Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, which is now part of CSX Railroad.
What has me thinking about this is the high heat and humidity we have here in southeastern Virginia. Each day this week the temperature has been in the mid-90s F and the heat index well over 100 F. These are the kinds of days I don't spend much time outdoors.
I know most everyone loves summer but I’ll take fall, spring and winter over summer anytime. But I have patience. The cooler and drier days of Autumn will be here soon. I’m saving my ‘shutter finger’ for those fall days of color. If you love summer, have at it. Get out. Make some good images and enjoy your photography.
Thanks for looking. Enjoy!

Korea has similar summer weather. High temperatures and high humidity. If I go out to make photos my equipment ends up covered in sweat. Unless I go back to Newfoundland to visit my parents, the number of photos in my yearly July and August folders is pretty low.
ReplyDeleteHere's to autumn and sensible weather!
Absolutely Marcus. Our last trip north we drove from Virginia to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Next time I would like to see PEI, Cape Breton and Newfoundland. Wonderful places filled with wonderful people.
DeleteNew Brunswick and Nova Scotia are lovely. PEI is great as well. Cape Breton is full of Newfoundlanders who ran out of money on their way to Toronto, as the joke goes. Newfoundland is nice as well. Lots of bleak landscapes that can be very photogenic. I hope you can get up there before too long.
