The Old And The New? Or, I Love Irony

Immediately I saw the irony upon noticing the traditional Amish horse drawn buggy next to the modern, internet-based retailer Amazon's boxes.  (click to enlarge)

Always keeping my eye out for irony or humor, I spotted this juxtaposition on a farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  Immediately, I saw the irony of the traditional Amish horse-drawn buggy next to the boxes with the massive modern Internet-based retailer Amazon's logo on their sides.  I found the combination quite interesting.

Old Order Amish don’t use modern amenities and you wouldn’t expect them to use computers and the Internet.  However, if you look closely, this garage is wired for electricity.  That tell's me that this belongs to a Mennonite family and not a traditional Old Order Amish one.  The two are similar but Mennonites don't necessarily stick to the "old ways" of no modern appliances, electricity, telephones, etc.

  1. Hi Dennis, well spotted. I think your photo would have worked as well even without the Amazon boxes. I also like the juxtaposition with the black, old fashioned buggy, and the brightly colored tricycle.

    1. Thanks, Jim. I spotted this at a farm at which there was a quilt shop in the home. You can safely assume I wasn’t the one shopping... ;-)

    2. Ha Dennis, in this day and age, I never safely assume anything. LOL

      Have a good weekend.

  2. Dennis:

This is a GREAT picture. Yes, irony abounds! Not only Amazon, but I like the child's bike near the buggy as well!
