Recent Road Trip To Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Part VIII; Random Images

This is the base of an old cement silo.  It's part of an old mill.  The current resident of the mill itself, as well as the house adjacent to the old mill is an artist.  Quite a good artist, in face, by the name of John Stevens.  I made several compositions involving the silo and its surrounds.  The mill is located in Bird-In-Hand, Pennsylvania.  (click to enlarge)

Being interested in more than just landscapes, wildlife, travel and nature, I keep my eyes open for anything of interest that I may encounter.  Here are some of those things that I encountered as I wandered around though Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

In Lititz, PA, these served as an outdoor display along the sidewalk or a curiosity shop. (click to enlarge)

There are many, many stone houses and barns in this part of Pennsylvania.  I spotted this stone house and the old bicycle propped against the adjacent stone wall.  I thought it made an interesting composition. (click to enlarge)

We happened upon a lovely stand of daylilies in a Lititz public park.  (click to enlarge)

Whenever I travel, I look for old cemeteries, especially old church cemeteries.  These headstones and the one below are located on the grounds of St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Strasburg, Pennsylvania.  They will be a nice addition to my "Garden of the Dead" project.  You can find a gallery showing some of the interesting images I have made from cemeteries all over the U.S. on my website here. Obviously, someone's mother.  But who's? (click to enlarge)

I made a quick grab shot of my friend, fellow photographer and friend Dave Hileman (TwoLaneTouring.com) walking through Kurtz Mill covered bridge on the way to explore the other side.  This was not an HDR image.  But you can see that the insufficient, not very good, never good enough for serious or professional work Olympus sensor and image process easily handled the extreme dynamic range of a bright sunny day outside as well as deep shadow inside.  Too bad m4/3 isn't any good.  (click to enlarge)

I spotted this home with this lovely yellow door in the small town of Lititz, PA.  I just couldn't help but make a few images of it.  To me, very pleasing to my eye.  (click to enlarge)

This was a place where the Amish farmers bring their livestock to be sold for market.  Sheep, goats and calves are sold on Thursdays at 2:00 p.m.  On the other side of the door was another sign indicating that feeder pigs are sold on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.  Take your choice!  (click to enlarge)

  1. "Gardens of the dead" I love that, and what a great collection it is as well.

    1. Thanks, Eric. We all talk about being planted, so I just decided to take the phrase literally. :-)

  2. Happy to see that I'm not the only one who finds it interesting to photograph in cemeteries. Will the two shown here make it in as color entries, or will they receive the b&w treatment.

    1. Jim, mostly likely black and white with just a tad of warmth added. That has become my style. I use a bit of the duo tone function in Lightroom.

I enjoyed this series, but this grouping is my favorite. I especially admired the rugged beauty of the cement silo!

    1. Thanks, Jeff,. That silo was very nicely decorated. Most likely because an artist now owns it. I have some additional images of the silo I have not posted. I may in the future.
