Typically, as I go about my day, I keenly observe my environment. I subconsciously and consciously stay aware of my surroundings and to identify pieces of what I may encounter which may make interesting images. Those pieces of my surroundings may come in the form of beauty, color, juxtapositions, decay, contrasts, humor, irony, abandonment, drama, motion, etc. I've always prided myself on recognizing things that would make interesting images that others don't notice. With being largely confined to my home over the past many weeks, I fear I'm losing that ability.
The best way to find out if, indeed, I'm losing my photographic touch is to go out and see what I can see. So, earlier this week I drove over to one of my local haunts to see how much of my vision I may have lost. Secondarily, I need photographic practice—badly! I decided that not only would I try to find things that might make interesting photographs, as I sometimes do, I would do it in a thematic way. In this case, I was looking for color and the effects of color. Sometimes I'll look only for a specific color.
The images here, whether successful or not, represent that hour or so wandering around a little place called Messick Point in Poquoson, Virginia. Also known as Bull Island it is located on the western shore near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Tiny little place, in fact. I've been there a hundred times before, watched its modernization and changes and always enjoy the quietude of the place.
Just for everyone's reassurance, I never came closer than 30 ft. (10 m) to the few fisherman, oysterman and crabbers that were in the area. Also, I had a mask and nitrile gloves if needed.
None of these images are anything more than practice at finding color and pleasing compositions. But, I enjoyed the "hunt!"
I hope you enjoyed the results of my recent attempt at gaining back my vision. I certainly did. But I do need more practice...

Greetings Dennis -
ReplyDeleteMost days I ride my bike along a relatively safe route and bring my Nikon Z50 + Tamron 18-400 with me. Most days I can find new photo opportunities as the wildlife and activity can change from day to day. Even shifting my ride times can make a difference.
I need to train my eye to pick-up on photo opportunities faster. Often I realize that there could have been a great photo only after the scene or whatever was in it changes.
With some reopening of some businesses now, some normally quiet areas have returned to functioning as beer gardens and other commercial purposes, so I need to be more creative about finding alternative routes.
Beer Garden. I haven't heard anyone use that term since my childhood growing up in the ethnic neighborhoods around the steel mills in my hometown in western Pennsylvania. Now, those were the places families gathered on the weekends to eat, socialize and, of course, drink beer. Thanks, Chris.
DeleteLovely photos, Dennis. I doubt that you're losing anything.
