The meandering up along the Maine coast continues.  We had no set agenda but just wanted to take several days and drive slowly north along the Maine coast visiting the small towns, shops and restaurants.  Of course, being who I am, I enjoy striking up conversations with local residents to better understand local culture.

One thing that was of interest to me was visiting some seaside towns that had the infrastructure in place to support lobster fishing.  I was interested in the harbors, waterways, docks, lobster pots, boats, fishermen, etc.  Most of the small towns we found had turned somewhat or very touristy in nature.  Only one that we visited, Stonington, lacked most of the tourist trendy restaurants, crowds and upscale shops.

Back in the 1970s, on our first trip to Maine, a friend and his family drove us to Boothbay Harbor.  Back then, as best as I can remember, it was still small, rather quaint and not overrun with crowds.  Not today.  Today its hard to find parking anywhere (even early in the morning), shops crowd both sides of the streets and there are people everywhere.  I found it hard to find a place even to get to the water.  To me, what once made Boothbay Harbor a very pleasant destination, has now vanished and turned into just another tourist trap.  Sad.

Still, we enjoyed our explorations and wanderings.  I made images of what seemed interesting to me, both visually and documentary.  Here is the first series of images I made as worked our way up the Maine Coast.  Another series of similar image will follow.
