Things I've Found That Just Work; Gaffer Tape

Gaffer Power is the brand I last bought and I've been very happy with it.  I am not sponsored nor get any type of
discount on any items I buy.  I pay the same price as do you.  (click to enlarge)
What is gaffer* tape?  We often hear that term, but what is it really?

According to Wikipedia, gaffer tape is:

"a heavy cotton cloth pressure-sensitive tape with strong adhesive and tensile properties. It is widely used in theater, photography, film and television production, and industrial staging work.
While sometimes confused with duct tape, gaffer tape differs in the composition of both the backing, which is made from fabric as opposed to vinyl or other plastics, and the adhesive, which is more resistant to heat and more easily removed without damaging the surface to which it was adhered."
I've been a user and believer in gaffer tape for a long time.  What primarily attracted me to this product is the high adhesive quality and little or no residue when removing the tape.  (I once read that if there is a little residue left behind, put a fresh piece over it and then remove it and the residue will come up with the new tape.  I've never tried it but I've kept that little tidbit in mind.)

I use gaffer tape as a general purpose tape and not just for photographic applications.  When I travel, I take a roll with me.  I buy both 2 inch wide and 1 inch wide rolls.  There are many brands and many colors.  I stick to black.  I'll normally buy a highly rated brand from either Amazon or B and H Photo.  Here is the link to the last roll I bought earlier this year from Amazon and I'm happy with it.

If you have something for which you now are using duct tape or masking tape, try gaffer tape.  It is really versatile and handy in so many ways.  Almost worry-free.  (I don't think anything is entirely worry free but this comes close.)

*so what is a gaffer you might ask?  A gaffer is the chief electrician on a movie or television production site.

  1. I get the 2 inch wide version, in both bright green (for labeling things) and the black color. For portability, I wrap some of each around a used up gift card, and carry in my luggage, camera bag, car, EDC, and anywhere else so I can have quick access. Gaffer tape is a wonderful solution to so many problems!
