Notes

NEW! As of January 1st, I've started an Instagram feed. I'll be posting photos daily so please follow @dennisamook. Thank you.

The other day I was attempting to clean off my desk.  I have a pile of notes I have taken and kept and was reading through them to find out just which ones may still be relevant and which could be discarded. I've seemed to become a prolific note taker over my adult life.  I started to read one particular note that I made when viewing a video about photographer Sam Abell.  I'm a fan of photographer Sam Abell.  I like his work.  I like his photographic style.  I lke is use of color and I like his black and white work as well.  Also, I think he is a good teacher.

Here are the notes I took as I watched the video.

-Compose first, then wait

-Slow down time

-Find your setting first, then your subject and finally wait for gesture

-Create images that are multi-layered

-Compose your images back to front

-Shoot from a low angle

-Look at the horizon in your composition.  Heads, etc. should be above or below but not in

-Create a frame within a frame

-Ensure there is separation between elements in your frame

-Micro compose

In this post, I won't go through each of these to explain what he meant, but I love this philosophy of photographing.  I guess these thoughts are all reasons Abell is such an excellent and successful photographer.

If you care to read more about Sam Abell and view some of his work, you can find his website here.

Thanks for looking. Enjoy!

  1. I'm a list guy as well but unfortunately I don't often enough find the time to utilize the information I see as valuable enough to take the time to jot down.

I did take the time to look at Sam Abell's work and WOW, I see why you appreciate his work. He is about as gifted a photographer as I have ever seen, thanks for that!
