Returning Over And Over Again To The Same Place But In Different Weather

NEW! As of January 1st, I've started an Instagram feed. I'll be posting photos daily so please follow at dennisamook. Thank you.

I've been spending some time at a nearby inlet where oyster fisherman base their boats and oyster businesses.  Every time I've photographed there in the past month or so it has been very cold but the sun has been out with a beautiful plain blue sky.  In other words, kind of boring for lighting, but interesting subject matter.

The other day, we had some dense fog as the air was warm but the waters in the area still very cool to cold.  That caused the moisture in the air above the water to condense and blanketed all of our local waterways with fog.  And, as you know, bad weather makes for good images.  Out I went.  I grabbed my "grab and go" kit, my Olympus E-M1 Mark II with the 12-100mm f/4 PRO lens attached along with the tiny Olympus 17mm f/1.8 lens.

This was made with me standing in the same position, different day, and a little wider focal length.  Huge difference
between this image and the one at the top of the post. (click to enlarge)

Photographing these exact same scenes on a sunny day is so much different than when the weather is foggy, stormy, snowy, etc.  It is a must to revisit favorite places and photograph in all kinds of weather as the essence of images change completely.

In this case, on this foggy day, the subtleties of the light, contrast, color and subject matter were very appealing.  Completely different than any other images I had made at these exact same places previously.

If you are not revisiting some of your favorite photographic spots during inclement weather, you are doing yourself a disservice.  Anytime the weather is bad, you should grab your camera and go out.  However, think and be safe.  Don't put yourself in danger in inclement weather.

You never know how subjects of the past look totally new and what you may find that you passed by during beautiful, sunny days.  Everything looks different.

Thanks for looking. Enjoy!
