Mooring lines and Deadrise Workboats (click to enlarge) Fujifilm X-T2, 10-24mm f/4 lens @ 13mm; 1/1250th sec. @ f/8; ISO 200 |
Since I made several images satisfying images when I visited a nearby inlet where the old white wooden deadrise oyster boats are based, I thought I would post a few more. For some additional background on this small inlet off the James River in southeastern Virginia as well as more of the images, you can see the original post here.
I have to remark that these guys are really hard workers and go out in almost any weather, albeit hot, below freezing, windy, etc. In many, they weathered faces clearly show years of exposure to the wind and extreme conditions.
A few have asked me for a print of an image I made of them and I gladly give them one. I usually print up an 8" X 10" enlargement so they can easily frame it for home. Don't underestimate the small effort or expense it takes to give away a few prints as this gesture is like a deposit in a checking account or investment in a bank. Treating people with respect as an individual and for what they do is an important part of the photographic process, in my opinion. It may pay dividends later if I ask one of them to board one of their boats or otherwise allow me to go somewhere to photograph that they would not allow strangers to go. To earn respect and trust you have to respect as well.
