Book Recommendation; "Backroads and Byways of Georgia; Drives, Day Trips, and Weekend Excursions"

Do you enjoy getting out with your camera and wandering the back roads, countryside, small towns and relishing the thought of serendipitously finding old barns, historic small clapboard churches, old mills, the vanishing landscapes of your youth, i.e., all of those things we took for granted that are now quickly disappearing.  I certainly do and I even named my blog The Wandering Lensman as wandering with my camera is one of my favorite things to do.  If you do as well, and are in the area of the state of Georgia in the southeastern United States, I have a book I think you should buy.

Photographer and writer David B. Jenkins has just published his book entitled, "Backroads and Byways of Georgia; Drives, Day Trips and Weekend Excursions."  He was kind enough to send a copy to me and I'm glad he did.  It is a marvelous resource if you enjoy what I described.  This is not a typical travel or tourist guide, this is a book that provides photographers just what we have been asking for—defined road trips and places to go that provide not only cultural or historic interest but the opportunity to make interesting images.  Jenkins takes the randomness out of those backroads trips and gives us a resource that will allow us to find all sorts of interesting subject matter to photograph in the way of vanishing Americana.

Jenkins is an excellent writer and photographer.  This book is chock full of his photographs.  I feel a connection to him as his interests in this particular subject matter and his photographic vision is very close to mine.  The book, which is 304 pages, is also packed full of maps, descriptions and suggestions to clearly get you into the most interesting backcountry Georgia has to offer.  In fact, he highlights 15 road trips just within that one state!  Add to that his giving the reader a list of accommodations, good places to eat, attractions and recreation and events for each area of which he writes. Jenkins has done an awful lot of good work putting this book together and I can highly recommend it.

I would love to have a book just like this for each state in the United States.  I hope Dave Jenkins continues on his journey as a writer and photographer and publishes books on other states.

"Backroads and Byways of Georgia; Drives, Day Trips and Weekend Excursions" is published by The Countryman Press, a Division of W.W. Norton.  If you live near Georgia and love to photograph the countryside, I recommend buying a copy.  You can buy a copy at Amazon here, in paperback or Kindle format.  Either way, it is less than $14 US and is well worth it.

I don't usually review books but I thought this one was worth writing about.  I don't receive any "click through" advertising or any other money for recommending this book.

Thanks for looking. Enjoy!
