Hula Hoops And Kids Having Fun

Even the big kids were having fun.  This young lady was somehow associated with
the event and she was showing the younger kids how Hula Hoops can be used (click to enlarge)
All images were made using the Olympus E-M1 Mark II, 12-100mm lens
I remember when Hula Hoops were first introduced in the 1960s.  People went crazy over them.  Not just kids, but adults had lots of fun with them as well.  I never paid much attention to them.  I did try one out but quickly came to the understanding that I wasn't built to swivel my hips and keep a hoop from falling to the ground.  I left that fun to others.

This little guy wasn't quite sure what to do with the Hula Hoop.  He was holding it and "dancing,"  just
bouncing up and down in rithym to the music. He has a real look of concern on his face! (click to enlarge)

Finally, he dropped the Hula Hoop, smiled and started acting as though he really was enjoying himself. (click to enlarge)
Recently, my wife and I went to an Easter Egg hunt with our son, daughter-in-law and our 17 month old granddaughter.  Of course, my role was to record the event for posterity. However, while I was there, I took the opportunity to photograph the many children just having fun—doing what kids do.  I noticed some of them were, yes, playing with Hula Hoops. I guess they have never really gone out of style or lost their attraction as the kids I saw playing with them were having lots of fun.

I made several images and thought I would post a few here.

I guess you can use them as a prop for dancing and jumping as well as swiveling your hips. (click to enlarge)
Not sure what these two were discussing.  Possibly contemplating trying two at once? (click to enlarge)

This young lady was really trying hard, almost to no avail.  As hard as she tried.... (click to enlarge)

..gravity eventually won out and the Hula Hoop would fall to the ground.  But that
didn't deter her.  She picked it up and started again. (click to enlarge)
No images of my granddaughter included here.  However, the point I want to make is although you may be photographing for a purpose, such as recording a family event, that doesn't mean you can't keep your eyes wide open and look for other interesting images at the same time.

I enjoyed watching the kids enjoying themselves.  Watching them brought back some memories of my own childhood and I found myself smiling while watching them having fun.

Thanks for looking. Enjoy!

  1. A fine bunch of Easter images, Dennis, and same here on the hula hoops. I got fairly competent back in the day, not at "hula-ing" but giving them a little back spin as you toss them forward vertically so they roll back to you. But they're light and colorful and big (to a kid) and they'll always be fun.

    1. Mike, you've brought back a forgotten Hula Hoop memory. I, too, remember the old "backspin" trick. We would see how far we could send it out with that backspin and then have it fully return.

  2. Dennis, I think you meant Olympus 12-100mm lens. If there is a 12-200mm I'd be delighted to hear about it :-)

    1. Steve, you didn't get the word on the new 12-200mm f/2.8 lens? LOL. Thanks. I still contend it is hard to be your own editor. The brain likes to fill in with what one's mind intended instead of what is really there.
