Winter Photography II Redux

Color version of the salvaged derelict deadrise work boat at Tyler's Beach in Isle of Wight County, VA (click to enlarge)

Last Monday I posted a short narrative illustrated with a black and white image I had taken during my photographic wandering from a few days prior.  Subsequently, I was asked if I had a color version of that image and, if so, would I be willing to show it as a comparison to the black and white image.  Of course.  Above is the color version of the image which you can find here.

I was photographically "raised" on black and white so I have a love for how it renders certain subjects.  I'm sure most viewers prefer color as it is more descriptive in terms of the added value of the color itself.  Still, black and white has a strong pull for me and I felt this particular scene worked better in black and white.  I didn't think the color added much value to it.  Additionally, with the derelict deadrise work boat's stained and weathered hull, I felt the black and white would better emphasize the texture and detail.

In the photo above, the sky didn't have quite the texture as depicted here.  In Lightroom, the graduated filter was used and I added a bit of the Dehaze slider to give the sky some additional interest.  Otherwise, the sky was pretty much a bland white with almost no texture and just a little bit of blue showing through.  I think this provides some additional interest to the image.

That all being said, you be the judge.  Do you like the black and white or the color version better?  After all, it is very personal.

Thanks for looking. Enjoy!

  2. I don't think I can explain it, but I like the black and white better. But I'll try. I think the black and white looks more dramatic and more contrasty. This makes it pop. ... having said that, I find it so hard to figure out when an image will look better converted to black and white.
