Rural Living

Every so often during my wandering I pass this little house which is situated out in a rural area of SE Virginia. Many of the times I pass this place, I notice clothes hanging out to dry on an old clothes line.  One doesn't see that very often nowadays.  Almost everyone uses an electric clothes dryer.

I've stopped to photograph this little scene several times in the past, the most memorable was when the clothes were hanging out while rain was pouring down (see image below). I've never been able to catch the person out hanging the clothes, however, and I wish I could as that largely bygone activity would make interesting images.

I did notice a couple of things this time that I had not noticed in the past.  First, the satellite dish is pointing at the window air conditioner.  Not sure what signals are being picked up from that!  I guess the owners don't watch satellite television any longer. Second, in the far back yard and partially obscured by the clothes, is a Port-A-John—the kind of self-contained temporary outhouse/toilet one would see at a construction site or concert.  Interesting.  It had not been there in the past or I would have noticed it before.

I wonder if there is no longer any toilet facilities inside?  I would suspect there is running water as the clothes have been washed, unless maybe a buckets of hot water heated from well water are used to fill an old wash tub to accomplish that job.

Just sayin'....  If you keep your eyes open and see what is all around you, there are lots of interesting things to be seen.

Also, the vantage point from where I made the photo in the rain is gone.  The owners have planted a garden in the field in the foreground and bean poles have been erected, obscuring the view.  As I have said many times in the past, don't put off making your images when you see something of interest as it almost always changes.

Thanks for looking. Enjoy!
