The X-T1 And Battery Life

Since I started using mirrorless cameras, I've been concerned with battery life.  Using a traditional digital SLR today, one can expect easily over a thousand exposures before having to recharge a battery.  No so with mirrorless cameras.

My first mirrorless camera was an Olympus E-M5.  Battery life was marginal, about 300 or so images before needing a recharge.  My second mirrorless camera was an Olympus E-M1. I did see a bit of improvement in battery life with that camera.  Typically, I could make 350 or so images.

When I started using the Fujifilm X-T1 as my primary camera, I consciously started paying attention to the battery life.  When I used it along with my other mirrorless cameras, battery life wasn't a major concern as I would go back and forth between the E-M1 and X-T1, never seemingly fully depleting a battery before switching.  Now, I no longer own any other mirrorless camera other than the X-T1 so its battery life becomes much more important again.

So how is the X-T1 doing?  Well, surprisingly, I just made 634 images + JPEGS (1268 in all) and still had juice left in the battery.  I know JPEGS aren't separate exposures, but I suspect it does take processor effort and battery energy for the X-T1 to create the JPEG as opposed to only a RAW file.

This number of images seems to be what I am currently enjoying at the present time.  As compared to others, I don't know why I'm getting such great battery life since the small battery is rated at about half those number of exposures.  Maybe I just happened to get a great battery or my camera is electronically conservative in its power needs or maybe Fuji improved the battery life with its last firmware update.

In any case, I'm very pleased and will continue to monitor battery life as well as always carry three extra batteries with me whenever I take the camera out for a day's enjoyment.

Thanks for looking. Enjoy!

  1. I too recently came into the Fuji-fold and bought the X-T1. I heard about the battery life concerns, and bought 2 spare batteries at the same time as my X-T1. I haven't counted, exactly, but I just came back from shooting some incredible waves pounding the shore on the east coast of New England. My import count says 981 RAW images (I was shooting high speed bursts; I'm not sure if that counts) and I still have battery life left. Like others have commented, it would be nice to have a "smart chip" in the batteries to relay power info better. When the battery dies, it goes from 3 bars to two and then dead in the matter of minutes.

  2. So is the camera/battery in the "high performance" mode?
