I wish I could immediately eliminate the words "like" and "awesome" from the English language. I would be a happy man. I am so tired of everyone under 30 (and some over) from using the word "like" at least four times in every sentence they utter from their feeble mouths. "Like, what are you, like, eating for, like, lunch?" "I went, like, to the movies with my, like, girlfriend and we, like, had a great, like time." Give me a break! Language is precious. It is how we communicate clear meaning to one another. Treat the language with the respect it deserves.
Additionally, have you noticed that with people of all ages, not just the young, everything, I mean every little mundane, routine act, event, happening, outcome, result and comment is "awesome?" I walked across the street! That is "awesome!" That hamburger is "awesome!" That TV show is "awesome!" That point-and-shoot camera is "awesome!" Everything nowadays is "awesome." Well, it isn't. Plain and simple. I hate to break the news but most stuff and happenings are ordinary and unremarkable. At best, neat. I'll even go for "cool" on occasion. Awesome? I think not.
Rant over. I'm off my soapbox. This is just me using my forum to spout off. Sorry, but I gave you sufficient warning.
Thanks for looking. Enjoy!

Dennis, you're a dang cranky old man!
ReplyDeleteRe the "A" word, yeah, it's stale or, as I was taught in English class, hackneyed.
Now, Yosemite was awesome and there's not another word I can think of that's as good.
It's okay to have a soapbox moment - or as many as your need. It helps to relieve tension and stress (pretty awesome huh?). :D Sorry, couldn't help myself.
ReplyDeleteI have to heartily agree with you about these and many other things, "like" (sorry again) the world's condition in general is not either of those things, but instead I find it horrifying to say the least. So in the end - go for the soapbox. :)
Not a bad rant, Dennis... Mine would be about the improper use of pronouns. Even my own children, now in their thirties, have learned to say things such as: "Him and Amy went out for lunch." Really? Are you kidding? Would you ever say "Him went out to lunch?" So, why say "him and Amy...."
ReplyDeleteWent to USA to see friends last year and finally found myself responding to their kids ad nauseam, "so it's just like (whatever it was) is it, it's not ACTUALLY (whatever) was happening, so what was he/she/it REALLY doing?
ReplyDeleteI even offered them some money ( can't remember was a dollar or two) if they didn't say 'like' for 24 hours
That was, like, fun.
