Gathering the morning's catch at the dock in Kilmarnock, VA (click to enlarge) X-T1, 18-55mm lens @ 25.4mm; 1/200th @ f/11; ISO 400 |
As and good photographer friend and I wandered around rural Virginia last week, we happened upon some fisherman emptying their vessel of their catch in the small coastal town of Kilmarnock. My immediate thought was how fortunate I was to happen upon and witness an activity that has taken place, essentially unchanged for hundreds if not thousands of years.
However, photographically, the first thought that came to my mind was "there is bright sunny summer daylight outside and deep shadows under the roof of the structure where they worked and could the X-Trans II sensor handle huge difference in values? After making a few images, then checking my LCD and histogram I got my answer. That answer was absolutely!
The men at work graciously allowed us to photograph them at work. I did my best to document them working without getting in their way.

Racked and Stacked! Ready for shipment to market. (click to enlarge) X-T1, 18-55mm lens @ 27.7 mm; 1/5th sec. @ f/11; ISO 400 |
I'll have to say this is not a a career that I would want. Slimy, smelly, long hours out in rough waters...you can imagine. But we should be thankful these men do this work so the rest of us can enjoy fish for our meals.
The X-T1 performed admirably! I was impressed by the "headroom" and "footroom" that I had to work with in bringing down the bright shiny highlights of the slick silver fish scales as well as bringing up the deep shadows from under the roofed in area.
Thanks for looking. Enjoy!
