Another Example of the Quality of Image from the Olympus E-M5

Cape Blanco Lighthouse, California

As I continue to edit my images from my recent trip, I remained amazed at the technical image quality of which the Olympus E-M5 is capable.  Considering the size of the sensor, the image quality surpasses my needs for the most part.  In the accompanying image, you can be the judge as to whether the image itself is or is not good, but technically, the camera produces excellent image files in the way of sharpness, color rendition, resolution, macro and micro contrast, saturation and dynamic range.  I'm not sure you can or cannot tell on your monitor, but there is no loss of detail in the highlights or shadows in this image.  In fact, I have darkened the shadows because the sensor capture too much detail.

I will write about my editing procedure in a future post, but suffice it to say now that when I do edit my images, I make very few adjustments for color, highlight and shadow detail, contrast and sharpness.  One reason is the electronic viewfinder.  Unlike an SLR, when I look through the EVF, I see how the file will be captured as I am looking at the image as it is generated directly from the sensor.  In other words, I can make all my adjustments for exposure, etc. before I press the shutter rather than afterwards.  That is a huge benefit of EVFs.

If you are "gun shy" about buying into the Micro 4/3 format, don't be.  Suggestion:  Rent an Olympus E-M5, E-M1 or Panasonic GH-3 or GX-7 with a lens or two (not the kit lens) and take one of those cameras out for a few days and put it through its paces and judge for yourself.  I think you will come to the same conclusion as I have.

Thanks for looking.  Enjoy!
