Settling on a name for something as personal as a blog, which is also available, is a daunting proposition. So, how did I come up with The Wandering Lensman.
I thought about what I would be writing and concluded that it would be primarily two subjects--photography and travel. To me they go hand in glove. I love traveling and I love photography. So, the concept became clear. Then I had to find a title that wasn't already taken by someone across the world. Do you know how many websites are out there? Millions! Blogs! I suspect a million or so. I went through some mental gyrations and came up with the term "lensman." I checked the definition to ensure that it was appropriate, then set out to figure an adjective to describe what about a lensman.
I toyed with words such as itinerant, traveling, etc., but I felt "wandering" was more my style. Why? Often times, I just go out and wander--explore--without any set agenda looking for visually interesting pieces of the world. These things could be tiny to scenic. I find them interesting because they evoke an emotion in me. That interest can be generated by people and what they are doing or their expressions, patterns, colors, shapes, repetition, movement, unrecognizability, etc. Sometimes, I zero in on a small piece of a scene that has interest, taking it out of context, giving it a different visual meaning. Wandering best describes what I do much of the time.
That doesn't mean that I don't go out with specific photographic goals to specific places. The two approaches to my photography mesh nicely.
