Springtime! Pastel Colors And My favorite Tree

Japanese Hybrid Dogwood blossoms. The dogwood tree has always been my favorite.

I enjoy the springtime almost as much as I enjoy the fall season.  The one difference is pollen!  That pesky yellow-green sticky pollen everywhere!  Yuk!

Springtime is a renewal.  A new beginning.  Springtime is a wonderful change from the short, cold, dreary days of winter.  Springtime just makes me feel better. It gives me energy and gets my creative juices flowing once again.

What about photography?  New subjects, more color and greater opportunities.  And…you don’t have to wear a coat, hat or gloves!

There is a lot of color in the spring.  The difference between spring and fall colors is that the
spring colors are mostly pastels.  Fall colors are much more intense.  In this random photo there are
yellows, lime greens, golds, oranges with a touch of white. (click to enlarge)

One thing a lot of people don’t recognize is the amount of color that comes with spring.  But look around.  There is color everywhere—not even considering the flowers.  Most people really don’t notice the outburst of color.  The tree colors aren’t the vivid ones of fall, but pastels of lime green, yellow, oranges and golds appear after the long winter.  I think appropriately so.  Vivid colors of the fall are a great last show before winter sets in and the pastels of spring represent the gradual daily temperature increases as well as new growth.

Petersburg Natioanl Battlefield, Petersburg, Virginia.  The dogwoods scattered
about the battlefield are a nice touch. (I tried editing this image to look more
film-like rather than digital as  it is from a camera copied mid-1980s
Kodachrome 64 35mm slide.  Did I succeed?)

Take advantage of spring for your photography as it won’t be long before the days are hot and, in many places, unbearably humid.  I know I’ll be out there with my camera as much as I can.

  1. In my opinion, Spring is The Season for the Mid-Atlantic. Except for the tree and grass pollen, all is right with nice temperatures before the heat and humidity of summer. Autumn can be very nice, but after the gray winter Spring is the great rebirth.

For many years, I only saw the bright colors of the azaleas, flowers, and flowering trees. Now, I notice the colors of the leaves as they sprout and grow on the tree limbs, ferns, and small plants of the undergrowth.

This is my 76th Springtime in Virginia. I think I am appreciating this one more than any other.
