How Would You Like To Be The Postmaster Here?

Amboy California post office.  The buildings in the background have been abandoned.

This is the post office for Amboy, California.  Amboy is located out in the Mojave Desert in the middle of nowhere.  I saw this while on my recent cross-country Route 66 road trip.  Across the street is the iconic Roy's Cafe & Motel, a must stop along Route 66 in California.  You can see posts about Roy's with images here and here.

This little post office struck me as a place I would not want for my mail to be delivered.  There are a few houses, a railroad and little else here.  Picking up my mail at this post office would most likely not result in an improptu conversation with my neighbors nor anyone else.

I'm sure there are more isolated post offices around the United States.  In fact, I've photographed many tiny, rural post offices over the years.  But the desert environment gives this a bit of a different feel.

By the way, the sky gives you a clue as to what was going on around the area.  There were heavy downpours in the desert, resulting in a lot of flooding, pooling water across the landscape and closed roads.  A most unexpected sight to see.

  1. That's a very interesting sky, well captured. I'm not one of them, but I do know people who like to live in isolation. I heard an author say he met someone at a Texas book signing who lives 5 hours, one way, from any stores.

I wanted to let you know that it looks like you intended to link Roy's with photos. - Jim

    1. Thanks Jim. I fixed it. I normally reread my posts the night before they are published but neglected to do so last evening. Things have not been anywhere near normal here for several weeks. My wife suffered from two medical emergencies since early October and about 95% of my time has been spent taking care of her and her needs. We moved from a city of 185,000 to a town of 9500 four years ago to get away from traffic, crowds, etc. We wanted a quieter and smaller lifestyle but not too small and not too far from civilization. ~Dennis

  3. If that photo is typical, I'd find it hugely frustrating that the great view is out the *opposite* side of the building to where the windows are! :-)

    1. David, thank you for your comment. The closest thing to anything I saw in the area resembling any activity at all was a railroad track that passed through nearby. ~Dennis
