Driving west on Interstate 90 in South Dakota, I noticed an old church sitting by itself in the middle of the prairie. Immediately I thought to myself that I needed to find that church and photograph it. Luckily, there was a nearby exit. However, after I exited the highway, I couldn't locate it. Finally, I found it as part of the 1880 Town near Murdo, South Dakota.
The day was very stormy. The light was generally bad for color landscape photography. I had just left Badlands National Park and made very few image because the light wasn't very good. However, as soon as I saw this old church, I knew that the light was perfect for this subject, sky, setting and everything about the scene screamed black & white image!
I tried to find some history of this old church building but I was largely unsuccessful save for the fact that it was moved from near Wall, South Dakota where it stood near—wait for it—Big Foot Pass.
You will see another version of this in a future Monochrome Monday post. Closer with much more detail but what you see here is basically how I first spotted it. Classic for monochrome.

Awesome. So moody. What focal length?
ReplyDeleteThank you. I’m not at home right now so I’ll let you know what focal length when I return. Just trying to remember, most likely around 24-28mm since I had the Nikon 24-120mm lens attached to my Z8.
DeleteThe focal length I used for this image was 33mm on a Nikon 24-120mm lens.
DeleteLove this. B&W is just right for this scene.
ReplyDeleteThank you Dave. ~Dennis
