I Missed The 10 Year Anniversary Of This Blog!

Just cruising along!  This is one of the first images I have made since having the surgical
procedure on my hand.  I can now hold my long lens without much problem.  Not photographing
for a month was a real test of dealing with frustration.  But more practice needed.

How could I miss such a milestone as the 10th anniversary of The Wandering Lensman?  But I did.  Its hard for me to believe that I've been writing and illustrating this blog now for 10 full years!  Think about all of the blogs (and podcasts) that have come and gone in the last 10 years.

I started writing this blog on April 3, 2013.  I created it because one of my best friends and I were getting ready to take a month long Route 66 road trip from Chicago to Los Angeles and back and I thought a blog was the perfect way to keep my family and friends apprised of what we were seeing.  The blog also gave me the ability to post one or more photographs every day from our trip.  That worked perfectly!

I found pleasure in writing the travelogue illustrated with my photographs from the trip.  I then decided to keep writing and, since I have been a passionate photographer since 1971, a photographic oriented blog allowed me to share my knowledge, experience, successes and failures with others.  That would allow me to pass on to my readers good information so they could enjoy photography as much as I have.  Also, I found it a pleasant way to share my images.

Think about how much things have changed, how photography has changed and how much you have changed!  The blog, essentially, has remained the same.

I've now written and illustrated 1550 posts with very little repetition.  On my various road trips since then, I've tried to post almost everyday.  When I was home, for many years, I posted three times per week.  A few years ago, I decided to cut that back to twice per week as I didn't want to post something, anything, just for the sake of posting.  I wanted my posts to have some value to my readers.  Two posts a week seemed manageable.

Later this month I should achieve 3,000,000 views of this blog.  That is another incredible milestone for a guy who just wanted to document a road trip.  Three million!  Are you kidding me?  Unbelievable.

I want to thank all of you who come and read what I have to say both in word and image.  I appreciate each of you.  Your questions and comments are very welcomed, enlightening and educational as when you comment, others can benefit from your experiences also.

I'll continue to write the blog as long as I can post content of value.  I've spend my adult life helping others, both through my profession and my personal life.  This blog is another way for me to help you enjoy photography as much as I have enjoyed it.

Again, thank you.

  1. Congratulations! Your blog is a very welcome refreshment in this day and age of clickbait, substance-lacking articles. I’ve commented only once or twice in the past (more of a silent reader myself) but I very much enjoy the quality writing on interesting topics, something that is more and more difficult to find nowadays (I enjoy both the technical and the “journal”, “on the road” type of articles that I find here). Thank you for 10 years of great reads and hopefully many more to come! Cheers!

  2. Congratulations Dennis! That's quite an achievement and speaks to your perseverence.

I discovered your blog, though I cannot say for certain when that was, during a Google search for information on the Olympus m4/3 camera I had, and am glad I found it. I like your scientific approach to the research you do and the results you share. For many of us who either don't have the finances or availability to test various cameras/lenses, or wonder whether we are missing out, your no-nonsense opinions and conclusions are valuable.

Here's hoping you post for another 10 years, or however long you desire to share.

    1. Thank you very much. I don’t currently have an Olympus or OM camera but I’m kind of missing the wonderful cameras, lenses and features. There may be one in my future. When, I’m not sure.

  3. Congratulations on the anniversary! And I hope many more to follow. I have been a faithful reader since your D810/Olympus days. In fact, during the period when it was painful for me to hold and use my D750 and lenses, it was this blog that was the encouragement to give the smaller and lighter Olympus a try. After a rental, I became a believer and Olympus user. Modern medical magic has improved my hands and wrists, but I am still using the Olympus (now an OM-1) as a principal camera.
There is always some gem of photo information, technique, humor, or travel interest contained in your blog. Thank you for sharing your experiences and personality with all of us readers.

    1. Thank you for you kind words and another thank you for being such a long time reader. I’m happy you are still enjoying the wonders and benefits of micro4/3 that so many, without even trying it, immediately dismiss. It is a wonderful format with feature filled cameras and excellent lenses. I’ll do my best to keep ip the good work.

  4. This is a great blog done by someone who loves photography for its own sake. A nice blend of photographic artistry and practice, and technology commentary. Thank you for sharing your photographic life with us and congratulations on your 10th anniversary!

  5. Congratulations! It takes a lot of patience to keep blogging for so long. There is nothing better than an ordinary text blog - I value them much more than videos, because they are not so time-consuming and it is easier to return to their content.
