This post is a continuation of a series showing some of the types of subjects I photograph other than my usual nature, landscapes, wildlife, travel and old disappearing Americana. Last week I posted some images from my "just for the color" series in which I primarily photograph a subject, as it says, "just for the color" and not necessarily for any other aesthetic. You can see those two posts here and here.
How many photographers do you know who lurk around cemeteries, hang around graveyards and photograph gravestones, monuments and other objects intended to remember and honor the dead? Well, I am one of them. I've been visiting graveyards for decades looking for interesting subjects to photograph. Mostly, I've either photographed in black or white or have converted my digital images to black and white as I have felt that removing the color removes any distractions and allows the viewer to see the essence of the cultural comments being made by the shapes and sizes of the headstones and monuments, their epitaphs, glyphs, and even ceramic photographs of the deceased.
I've always felt that what we find in cemeteries are comments on the prevailing cultural norms of the time when the dead were buried. Also, cemeteries are a window into history. On a more humorous note, since I suspect I'll be spending a lot more time in a cemetery over the decades (and potentially centuries) than out of one, I thought I would get comfortable with the surroundings.
Two aspects of cemetery photography that I find important are the light and how you edit the images. We all know how important light is to our photography but with my cemetery series of images, editing becomes equally important. I edit these images quite dramatically in some cases to illustrate the unusual nature of the subject matter.
Here are a few images form my 'cemetery' series.
There are many interesting compositions in, of all places, a cemetery. I will post a few more later in the week.
Thanks for looking. Enjoy!
